There is a hidden benefit found in the process of creating. Stress is replaced with peace.
Art helps us heal into health
Lessons from art parties Having facilitated art parties for almost ten years now, I've gathered some interesting observations. One of the most profound is this. People finish an art party in a happier state of mind than when they begin. Yes, I know, there is a bit of wine! But even those who just sip soda leave with much broader smiles than when they arrived.
Creating shifts our emotions After years of watching this phenomenon, I began doing some research. What I found totally supported my theory. The process of creating shifts our minds and emotions. It calms us. We become more peaceful and relaxed. Countless articles supported this and documented studies and testimonials.
Finding the present moment The secret of art's therapeutic effect is that when our hands are engaged in a creative act. It's hard for our brains to dwell on troubles while creating. Once we're in the flow of a painting or crafting, we're distracted from worries. The act of creating has the power to engage us so fully that we are brought into the present moment. The present is the sweet spot of peace. When we are anxious or worried, we are usually contemplating some future happening. When we're burdened by regret or depression, our minds are churning in past moments. Finding ways to become totally present in the NOW moment is what has the power to lighten our spirit and coax out some smiles.
Scientists have noted the 'stress hormone', cortisol is greatly reduced during the act of art-making. I am no scientist, but I certainly have seen the effects of this hormone being released! I have seen the brightening of countenances and the broadening of smiles. It's magical!
