"Durham Dreams" is dedicated to the reality of the dreams that have already transformed the city of Durham, North Carolina, as well as to the dreamers yet to come that will take her still farther.
Since moving to Durham from Boston with my family about 5 years ago, I began a series of paintings centered around a central theme of human hopes, dreams and aspirations. As this statement series evolved, it branched into specific representations of individuals' dreams as I began creating what I call, "Dream Portraits". Using color and symbolism as metaphoric language, these paintings told the stories of clients' own specific dreams for their lives. My work and residency in Goldenbelt Studios gave me the opportunity to have intriguing conversations with visitors in my studio about the transformation that has occurred in downtown Durham due to the "dreamers" over the last 20 years. From this, the idea for the "Durham Dreams" project was born.
