"It is not time to give up on Downtown Durham" was the message Bill Kalkhof spread in the early 1990s as business and people were moving into the suburbs.
Bill Kalkhof, the President of Downtown Durham, Inc. (DDI) since 1994 is looking to revitalize the downtown with a series of projects to add to the culture, while keeping Durham's history intact.
DDI is leading an over a billion dollar initiative between both private and public sectors of the city to rejuvenate the downtown.
Several projects are already put in place and highly used. DDI has worked on projects including American Tobacco Campus, the Durham Bulls Athletic Ballpark, the Performing Arts Center, West Village Apartments, and the Durham Central Park.
Kalkhof's influence on Durham is not limited to DDI and the revitalization projects. Kalkhof has worked with several community groups including the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention and Visitor's Bureau, the United Way, the Downtown Rotary Club, and City and County Commissions.
Before taking over DDI, Kalkhof held the Executive Vice President position for the Durham and Chapel Hill Home Builders Association.
